Gastroenterology explained

Gastroenterology and general surgery specialists deal with diseases of the gastrointestinal tract - anywhere from the oesophagus to the anus. There is a wide variety of diseases encountered and therapies include dietary and other lifestyle advice, medications and surgery. At the heart of good gastroenterological practice is the careful assessment of patients on a one on one basis. Diagnosing patients can be a complex process and sometimes an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan can only be achieved after several investigations. Sometimes it is necessary for there to be more than one specialist involved.

Risk factors

Diet, life style and family history in particular first degree relatives.
Most bowel cancer cases are sporadic and old age onset with no family history.
In Australia the trend of developing bowel cancer is 1:12 by the age of 85.

Screening and prevention

Faecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT) in patients with no sympotms
Colonoscopy

Prognosis is improved with early diagnosis of bowel cancer.
